Our Village

At Saint Joseph’s Shankill we are Ireland’s First Dementia Village.

Saint Joseph’s Shankill is the only care home in Ireland that solely cares for people living with dementia, and we aspire to demonstrate excellence in how we look after and care for people living with this very difficult illness.

At Saint Joseph’s Shankill we offer residential and respite care alongside our day care services too.

We are a ‘Butterfly’ Home, a recognised kite mark awarded by Dementia Care Matters

We support families and loved ones of people living with dementia, and we enjoy working with the HSE Understand Together , the GENIO supported project Living well with dementia and corporate Ireland to bring awareness about dementia and its impacts to everyday conversation and understanding.

You can ckeep up to date on all our news HERE.

Our village is the hub of all this activity, we have 6 lodges, all named after local areas;

Rathmicheal Lodge – home to 10 residents

Avoca Lodge – 8 people live in Avoca Lodge

Carigeen Lodge – home to 13 of our residents

Kilcroney Lodge – where 8 people call home

Glendalough Lodge – a wonderful home to 12 residents

Delgany Lodge – with 9 people living together.

Saint Joseph’s Dementia Village is community of people living and working together.  This enables people with dementia to live as normal a life as possible within the restriction of their illness.

Residents (all of whom are living with dementia) are cared for by staff that are skilled and experienced in all aspects of the complex needs of dementia.

Our Dementia Village is a community that is creates spaces and areas for people living with dementia to live, enjoy and socialise (the cinema, coffee shop, gardens), and when necessary to relax and feel calmed (our sensory and family rooms).

We have undertaken all this work over the last 2 years in order to transform Saint Joseph’s from a ‘traditional style nursing home’ into a dementia friendly village.

We have done this to enable and empower people living with dementia to live active lives.

We must give people living with dementia and their families the best care we can, today and in the future.

We promise to work together and use modern sciences, design, care planning innovation and research proven activities to create the safest, most caring, enjoyable dementia friendly community we can.
