Lap the Gap and Family Fun Day!

Lap the Gap and Family Fun Day!

Nearly 50 bikers completed the ‘Lap the Gap Fun Run’ around Wicklow in aid of Saint Joseph’s Shankill on Sunday the 23rd of June.

A Cake Sale and Family Fun Day including face painting, ice cream, games, plant sale, a raffle, BBQ and international food market and music for all to enjoy was also held in Saint Joseph’s Shankill coinciding with the return of the bikers.

A huge thanks is owed to Patrick and Fran O’Leary for organising the Lap the Gap Bikers to come from near and far to take part in this fundraiser!  The couple who are regulars on the biker scene wanted to raise money for Saint Joseph’s Shankill after hearing about the dementia specific, social care that Saint Joseph’s is renowned for now.  Also thanks go to the committee of Edel Gammel; Assistant manager in AIB Bray, Aidan O’Toole and Jim Leahy.  Over 3,000 was raised on the day thanks to everyone who donated their time, their baking or biking skills too!

Saint Joseph’s is the only care home in Ireland that solely cares for people living with dementia.  11 people are diagnosed with dementia every day and there are 55,000 people living with dementia today but in only twenty years’ time this number will have tripled.

Although Saint Joseph’s cannot change the devastating effects dementia has on people and their families. They have changed the way they care for people. They look beyond the illness and focus on peoples’ feelings, and have created 6 lodges where people at the same stage of dementia live together.
