Caring for Carers

At this very stressful time and thanks to our colleagues in Saint John of God Hospital who have put together a resource for people caring for others at home.

CARING FOR CARERS DURING COVID 19

St Joseph’s delivers a series of Caring for Carers training courses to provide dementia specific training to carers giving them the understanding of dementia and dementia care, the tools to cope with the stress of caring for someone with dementia and the ability to access the support systems to assist them in their role as a carer of someone living with dementia.

The training programme equipped carers with more skills and knowledge of how best to care for their loved one living with dementia at home.  They were taught how to communicate better and to understand the trajectory of the illness.

Information and assistance on how to access services and enter the ‘dementia system’ was covered, including specific education which focussed on:

Feedback was extremely positive from participants who completed the course and some of their comments included:

‘I feel less stressed’

‘I feel it is ok to feel frightened now after hearing the passion in the tutor’s voice’

‘Great idea to start something like this and badly needed as dementia becomes more common’
